As described in our FL 2026 New Developments Newsletter, don’t forget that a new California requirement takes effect on February 1, 2026 – the required “Know Your Rights Notice” for employees. The California Department of Industrial Relations (DIR) has posted its template notice online, and here is the information you need:
- By February 1, 2026, employers must provide each current and new employee with a stand-alone written Workplace Know Your Rights Act notice via regular communication methods. The “SB 294 Know Your Rights Notice” in English can be found here, and the Spanish version can be found here. This notice also must be provided annually, and the DIR may soon be posting the Notice in other languages as well.
- In addition, employers also must allow employees to designate an emergency contact and collect this information from new hires going forward no later than March 30, 2026.
