Why Conduct an Exit Interview? When a company terminates an employee, they typically know the reason why the termination. Be it poor work performance, theft or lack of quality work, the reason why you terminate your employee is clear.
However, when an employee resigns, it is not so clear. The employee may say that they are relocating, or have found a better opportunity, but is that the real reason?
Conducting the Exit Interview
Conducting a formal “Exit Interview” with all of your employees who resign is a proactive, sound approach to discover the truth behind your employees’ resignation. It will allow you to address any issues that may have come to light and provide you with the data to accurately analyze why your staff is leaving your employ. An effective exit interview is one of the very last conversational interactions that occurs between the employee and the Company; one which will provide you that “insight”. It becomes a valuable tool for future recruiting, and diminishing turnover, a typically high hidden cost to employers. It helps you understand the issue “from the employees’ perspective”, and allows you the ability to “fix” whatever hidden problems might exist at your workplace. Look for patterns obtained during the exit interview process to identify possible organizational issues.
